CULTURE THREAD!Hey /b/, I hadn't started one of these in a while... What's the saddest or most moving song/piece of music you've ever heard, and why? Don't feel you have to justify your choice, but I'd like to know what it is about a song that tugs at your heartstrings or w/e.Don't feel limited by genre/period/other constraints etc.As ever, points for knowing which song is the picture.TL;DR: ITT: SAD SONGS.
Gorecki's 3rd symphony, the last song of La Boheme, or the 3rd movement of Shostakovich's 5th symphonyGorecki because, well, it's supposed to be a cycle of sad songs, and it does a very good job at that. The third movement is a mother, singing for her dead child. It's very beautiful. The last song in La Boheme, only when it's sung really well. The instrumental music when he finally realizes that Mimi is dead is craaaazy. And Shostakovich's 5th symphony... well, you bitches just need to go listen to it, and you will understand its greatness.
valse triste. composed by the legendary saddinarius sadditorio

Fuel by Metallica. It influences me a lot when I ride my motorbike. I always tend to push the throttle up a bit more, and it'll always get me headbanging, sunshine or rain. Also, dicks.
Also, Shostakovich's 8th string quartet. I dunno if it's really SAD music, it's almost past that, like absolute despair. He wrote it at a time that he was planning to commit suicide, so...Here's a recording LISTEN TO IT it will fucking blow you away. It's amazing.

Holy shit! Is there actually discussion about Tristan und Isolde going on on my /b/?I'm writing my dissertation on Wagner's Ring for my Ph.D. in music theory... didn't think I'd see any other Wagnerians here.By the way, it is not true that the chords never resolve. The last few bars of Isolde's Liebestod not only resolve the interrupted Love Duet from the second act, but also resolve the Tristan chord. It is true, of course, that this is the first and only time that the Tristan chord gets a satisfying tonal and unambiguous resolution, but it is an important dramatic point, because it is only in their deaths that their love can be complete (a point which is made over and over again in the second act).So it is inaccurate to say that no chords ever resolve in Tristan und Isolde, but the spirit of that comment is in the right direction.

Almost every Pink Floyd song where Syd Barret is still singing.
>>46124980I've got Opera, too, but it also doesn't seem to have a built-in way to save it all. My Opera-fu isn't very strong, though, so I'm probably missing something. The thread's also been submitted to 4chanarchive, too, so we should also have that.

>>46108033> As lame as it sounds, Chopin's Raindrop Prelude in Db Major (Op. 28, No. 15) is pretty fucking sad. Yes, it's the Halo 3 song. I don't care. It's only since bloody Halo that it became so well known. I remember an ex-girlfriend of mine who was obsessive about piano telling me about it, after I told her it was my favorite of his I'd heard. She said (and this is from a memory from a while ago) that Chopin wrote it when he was very ill, or dying or some such, for his wife. If you consider the tune with that in the backdrop, it gets even better.Really good. Also pianofags, Debussy's Suite Bergamasque kills it, still a favorite of mine. Particularily the last movement, it gets me pumped for whatever.>>46108349You are winning. But how the hellfuckbuggerysod you managed to even consider playing Rhapsody 2 is beyond me. Whenever I put on a CD with the Hungarian Rhapsodies 1-15 I skip the first track, through impatience to rock hard to the 2nd.Killa.Also, non-classicalwise, 'First Day Of My Life' by Bright Eyes is faggy and good and happy.
>>46128639Edgar-Wilson = WIN
>>46128202hahah yes. that one. :D
>>46128639Caruso? Hmm... So I am guessing we also like Bjorling and Lanza?I am more of a Domingo, Melchior, Vickers tenor myself.High-Q's or GTFO!!

Finale to 5th Symphony - Jean Sibelius2nd movement of 3rd symphony - Howard HansonGorecki's 3rd isn't so bad...Penderecki's Polish Requiem is good too.And of course Barber's Adagio for Strings or First Essay for Orchestra.Lament or Styx by Giya Kancheli.Pretty much anything by:Peteris Vasks Valentin Silvestrov

>>46130092Penderecki's Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is one of my favs
louis armstrongs performance of what a wonderful world
yeah that's also a good one. its sad in a different way, but im one of the few people i know who can actually sit through it, haha.
Here you go dear brother, this isnt very moving, but I do think it is a nice piece of jazz music.http://www.finalturnabout.com/music/gmjs/08%20Godot%20-%20Fragrance%20of%20Dark%20Coffee.mp3Yes I do know it's for a game.
Also, anything by Percy Grainger. The 'big ones' being Lincolnshire Posy, The Power of Rome and the Christian Heart, and Danish Folk Song Suite.Karel Husa's Music for Prague left a huge impression on me the first time I heard it, but as I grow older I'm starting to like his Apotheosis for this Earth much more.
